36th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON: September 20th, 2009
In 2008 Ethiopian running legend Haile Gebrselassie broke his own world record of 2:04: 26 set 2007 in Berlin by almost half a minute (2:03:59 hrs) being now the first runner in history to stay under 2:04 hours for the 26 mile course. A record number of 35.783 finishers from 107 countries were cheered on by a million spectators along the streets of the German capital at perfect weather conditions.

Once again this year, the real,- BERLIN MARATHON made for an excellent skater festival. Who was paying any attention to the World Championships in China? The pros from the World Inline Cup did not look as if they were feeling like they were in the wrong place, at least. Everyone who participated completely enjoyed the enthusiasm and attention from the spectators. When you’ve broken 27 world records, the most recent being the 30k en route to his fourth consecutive victory in the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON on Sunday, publicity tends to take care of itself. But Haile Gebrselassie has shown his African colleagues just how to succeed in self-promotion too. Of course, it helps to have such a genial personality, but that perma-smile, his success in learning English, and his endless availability, to fans and media alike have all made him the biggest success story in athletics during the last 20 years. The Ethiopian duo of Haile Gebrselassie and Atsede Habtamu Besuye earned maximum points in the World Marathon Majors (WMM) rankings with their double success in the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON. While Gebrselassie achieved his fourth victory in a WMM race, Habtamu completed a dream debut: on her very first appearance in a WMM event she collected 25 points.

Haile Gebrselassie won the real,- BERLIN-MARATHON for the fourth year in succession this morning. But having reached for the stars with a ferocious attempt to break his world record of 2.03.59, set in the German capital last year, the Ethiopian ended up with a handful of moondust, finishing in a jog of fatigue in 2.06.08. “I was very tired, I pushed too much,” he said immediately afterwards.
